In Chinese art, symbols, like language and writing, are used as a means of communication. These Chinese earrings with Shou character, or ideogram, represents "long life". According to the beliefs of the time, the presence of a specific visual symbol was believed to have a desired effect on the bearer's life.

This stylized Shou symbol is from the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
